LCW Showdown Television Results 04.22.09

LCW Showdown Television Results (April 22, 2009) live from the Arena at Gwinnett Center in Duluth, GA.

Tonight’s episode of LCW Showdown is dedicated in loving memory to John D. Hancock (1953-2009), the father of LCW Founder Christian Calaway.

From the broadcast booth, Tony Schiavone and Larry Zbyszko welcomed everyone to LCW Showdown as "Monsters" by Matchbook Romance, the LCW Showdown theme song, played in the background and as fireworks exploded all over the arena. Schiavone talked about the passing of LCW Founder Christian Calaway’s father and expressed his deepest sympathies and condolences for Calaway’s loss and said, “Wherever you are boss, we’re thinking about you.” Schiavone and Zbyszko talked about the Showdown Sweepstakes last week and talked about the various new contenders for the championships in Legends Championship Wrestling including the new number one contender for the LCW Universal Championship, Barry Windham. Schiavone announced that tonight Windham and LCW Universal Champion Magnum TA would sign a contract for their match at LCW Uprising on May 10th. Schiavone and Zbyszko also discussed the announced King of the Legends tournament, with the first two quarterfinal matches to take place tonight with Diamond Dallas Page facing Paul Orndorff and Don Muraco taking on Abdullah the Butcher.

LCW Television Champion Wildfire Tommy Rich (with Missy Hyatt) defeated Rocky Johnson in 4:47 by pinfall after the Wildfire Driver. After the match, Missy Hyatt grabbed a microphone and said she didn’t think Koko B. Ware, who beat the Honky Tonk Man last week in a number one contenders match in the Showdown Sweepstakes, was worthy of being the number one contender for the LCW Television Championship. Missy Hyatt said that she had asked for, and received from LCW General Manager Eric Bischoff, two special matches over the course of the next two weeks for Koko B. Ware to prove himself worthy of the title shot. Hyatt said next week Ware would face Hollywood John Tatum and the week after that he would face Austin Idol. Hyatt added that if either man could beat Ware, he would become the number one contender instead of Ware. Hyatt added that she would be the special guest referee before leaving the ring with Rich.

In the back, one half of the LCW World Tag Team Champions, the Raging Bull Manny Fernandez, was walking through the arena corridor when he ran into one half of the LCW United States Tag Team Champions, Terry Funk. Fernandez shook Funk’s hand, welcomed him back to LCW and congratulated him on being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame and winning the LCW United States Tag Team Championships with Big Van Vader last week. Funk thanked Fernandez and congratulated him on winning the LCW World Tag Team Championships, but questioned his choice of a partner: One Man Gang. Funk said he was glad to see that Fernandez had seen the error of his ways and his actions, but hanging with someone like One Man Gang, a guy who would never change and never stop being a bully, was disappointing. Fernandez reassured Funk that he didn’t have anything to worry about. Funk said maybe Fernandez had something to worry about and Fernandez asked Funk what he meant. Funk said now that he and Vader were LCW United States Tag Team Champion, maybe they would come after the LCW World Tag Team Championships next. Fernandez smiled and said, “Any time you want the shot, brother.” Funk and Fernandez shook hands again and Funk walked away.

Butch Reed (with Slick) defeated Corporal Kirchner in 6:20 by pinfall after a clothesline from the middle rope. After the match, Slick grabbed a microphone and warned Nikita Koloff that he had a target on his back now. Slick said that Butch Reed was a former LCW Television Champion, and former LCW International Champion and even a former LCW Heritage Champion and he wanted his title back. He added that Reed beat Koloff’s friend, the longest reigning LCW Universal Champion Magnum TA, to become the LCW Heritage Champion and he was going to beat Koloff at LCW Uprising on May 10th, to become the LCW Heritage Champion once again.

In the back, Sean Mooney and cameraman Jackie Crockett were running to the scene of an attack where they found the Dynamite Kid laying on the ground, holding his knee and writing in pain. Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart were there and Neidhart explained to Mooney, as Hart checked on Dynamite, that they found Dynamite like this and that someone had attacked him from behind. LCW General Manager Eric Bischoff arrived at the scene and asked Dynamite who attacked him and he said he didn’t know because he was attacked from behind. Bischoff asked the medical official if Dynamite would be able to wrestle tonight. While Dynamite protested, the medical official told Bischoff that his knee was messed up and he wouldn’t be able to wrestle tonight and, more than likely, not at LCW Uprising either. Bischoff said, “In that case, we’re not going to wait until LCW Uprising. Tonight, LCW World Tag Team Champions Manny Fernandez and One Man Gang will defend their titles against the Hart Foundation!” Bret Hart looked shocked as Jim Neidhart smiled and laughed as the show went to commercial.

Diamond Dallas Page came out before the King of the Legends tournament quarterfinal match and bragged about his accomplishments in the wrestling business, including being the Lord of the Ring, winning the Battlebowl tournament at WCW Slamboree 1996. Page had the Battlebowl ring on his finger and said the ring proved that he was the Lord of the Ring, but he was about to become the King of the Legends. Paul Orndorff came out and, from the entrance ramp, said that to become the King of the Legends Page would have to go through him first. Orndorff said Page had been Lord of the Ring, but there was one thing he had never been. Orndorff pointed up and a picture of him as LCW Universal Champion appeared on the LegendsTron. Page took off the Battlebowl ring and placed it in the corner as Orndorff came down to the ring to start the match.

Diamond Dallas Page defeated Paul Orndorff (with Sir Oliver Humperdink) in 18:49 by pinfall in a quarterfinal match in the King of the Legends tournament after the Diamond Cutter after hitting Orndorff with the Battlebowl ring. During the match, the referee was knocked out. Kevin Sullivan, with his valet Luna Vachon, came out and interfered in the match, attacking Orndorff until Don Muraco came out and cleared him out of the ring and chased him to the back. The distraction allowed Page to grab the ring and hit Orndorff with it before hitting him with the Diamond Cutter for the pinfall and the win.

After the match, Paul Orndorff came out and chased Sullivan out of the ring, through the crowd and to the back. Meanwhile, Ken Patera came out, picked up the chair that Sullivan used on Muraco and blasted Abdullah the Butcher with it before chasing Akbar and Al-Kassie up the entrance ramp and to the back as the show went to commercial.

In the ring, a table was set up and ring announcer Gary Michael Capetta introduced LCW General Manager Eric Bischoff who came out with a contract in his hand. Bischoff got in the ring and introduced LCW Universal Champion Magnum TA and the number one contender for the LCW Universal Championship, Barry Windham. Magnum came out and Windham came out with J.J. Dillon and joined Bischoff and Magnum in the ring. Before signing the contract, Windham said, “Let’s be honest, Magnum. I did what you were never able to do. I was what you never were. I became NWA World Heavyweight Champion and in three weeks I’m going to do what no one else has been able to do. I’m going to beat you to become the LCW Universal Champion.” Windham signed the contract and then Magnum signed the contract without saying a word. Windham tried to hit Magnum with a running clothesline, but Magnum moved out of the way and grabbed Windham. He tried to hit him with the belly-to-belly suplex, but Windham slipped out of the hold and out of the ring. That left J.J. Dillon in the ring alone with Magnum TA. Dillon realized he was in the ring with Magnum and started to badmouth the champion and poked him in the chest. Dillon realized what he was doing and slowly stopped poking Magnum in the chest before trying to leave the ring. Magnum spun Dillon around, grabbed him and hit him with the belly-to-belly suplex through the table. Windham pulled Dillon out of the ring and carried him to the back as the show went off the air.
