LCW Showdown Television Preview: Breaking Point Fallout!

by Matt Saye

Even though the LCW Breaking Point 2009 pay-per-view is in our rear view mirrors, the fallout from the epic event will truly be felt as LCW rolls into Showdown this week.

This past Sunday, Bill Goldberg made his debut with Legends Championship Wrestling, when he speared LCW Universal Champion Magnum TA, following Magnum's disqualification win over The Great Muta. Earlier in the evening, LCW Chairman of the Board Ted Turner had arrived, and appeared to have had someone in his limousine with him. No-one, however, expected Goldberg to appear. After the brutal Universal Title match, a huge brawl broke out, which saw the Yakuza Mafia and Nikita Koloff, Dr. Death Steve Williams, and Big Van Vader who had come out to defend Magnum, brawling in and out of the ring. Meanwhile, Goldberg made a shocking entrance, and ended the night with a spear on Magnum TA. After committing the act, Goldberg seemed to have been endorsed by Turner and LCW General Manager Eric Bischoff. Is this a sign of things to come for Magnum and his LCW Universal Championship, or just a sign of deja vu with LCW Chairman Ted Turner's past in Legends Championship Wrestling?!

We have a new LCW Television Champion, and his name is Wildfire Tommy Rich as he defeated former champion Brutus The Barber Beefcake this past Sunday. However, this was not accomplished alone, as Hollywood John Tatum and Austin Idol, from Missy Hyatt's group, Hyatt International, all had a hand in securing Rich's win. However, following the contest there seemed to be some confusion between Idol and Tatum as to who would be Rich's first challenger, seemingly discounting Beefcake from a return match. Will we get a clearer idea of who the number-one contender is this week on Showdown?

The Raging “Bully” Manny Fernandez proved without a shadow of doubt that he hadn't “gone soft” as he defeated One Man Gang at LCW Breaking Point this past Sunday. However, after the match, Fernandez was attacked by King Kong Bundy. What reason did Bundy have for these actions, we might find out this week on Showdown.

The Long Riders (who previously in the evening suffered a loss of their own) got involved in the LCW World Tag Team Championship Match this past Sunday, as Dirty Dick Slater and Cowboy Bob Orton faced the champions, The Nasty Boys, for the gold. After this interference from The Long Riders, we have a clear indication that the feud between them and Slater and Orton is far from over. How will Col. Robert Parker react to this on this week's Showdown, and will Slater and Orton receive a rematch?

Breaking Point wasn't to be the lucky night of one, Diamond Dallas Page, when he was defeated by LCW International Champion Tully Blanchard, following an accidental spear from Dr. Death Steve Williams, which was intended for Blanchard, but caught Page instead. Williams redeemed his mistake with an apology and went on to defeat Barry Windham later in the evening.

Also of note this past Sunday. heading into Showdown: LCW Heritage Champion Kevin Sullivan retained the title against Paul Orndorff. Rick Martel is the new LCW United States Champion, defeating his former partner, turned bitter rival Tito Santana for the belt. LCW United States Tag Team Champions The Powers of Pain sent The Great Kabuki and Kendo Nagasaki packing from Legends Championship Wrestling, after defeating them in a titles vs. careers match at Breaking Point. Finally, Ken Patera and Sgt. Slaughter got some measure of revenge on the Bolsheviks by defeating them, when the US Armed Forces chased Akbar and Al-Kassie from ringside.

“Wrong” by Depeche Mode, from their new album, Sounds of the Universe, is the official theme song for the LCW Torment pay-per-view, Sunday, April 12, 2009, only on LCWTorment.com.
